Before I arrived at Minnesota, one of my dreams was to go to America, because I really like American culture. I have been having a great time with my host family, classes, activities, and so on. Through this home stay program, I generally felt three things.
First, I was surprised by the differences between Japan and America. Take eating habits for example: In Japan, we eat a meal only three times in a day. However I came away with the feeling that American people always eat something. During the time that I have been staying in Minnesota I eat something like pies, ice creams and popcorn although we ate supper two or three hours ago. In Japan, it’s impossible. And when I went to TARGET, also I was surprised, because all of the groceries are big size and there’re many kinds of grocery!! Therefore I was excited only watching them at the grocery store.
Next, I learned about indirect and direct keenly. American people often use direct expression. Conversely speaking, Japanese people have to use the expression in America. For example, when I wanted to be alone, I said to my host sister, “I’m tired.” She knew what I said yet didn’t know the real meaning. If she were Japanese, she would leave my room.
Thirdly, I could change myself by this program. Before I came in America, I had already known that American students are active in their classes. Actually I’m shy person, therefore I couldn’t be active in my class when I was in japan. However I could ask some questions to teachers, and speak English in classes aggressively like American students. After I go back to japan, I want to be active in my classes.
Finally, everything is my valuable experience, so I’ll never forget my special memories!! I can’t possibly put my gratitude into my words. Especially I’m thankful to my host family. Since I met them, I had spent many wonderful days. And I became more mature because of their help. I love my host family. They treated me like a part of family. Besides, I would like to say “Thank you so much!!” to Joel, Linda, Peggy, Katie, Jeff, Brenda and my parents!! I’m grateful to them for helping me. I would like to come back to Minnesota again! Thank you for everything!!!
Love you. (387)
