Shakespeare in Love (rewrite)

     I watched Shakespeare in Love. I wanted to watch a romantic drama film, so I chose this movie from three movies. This movie was released on December 3, 1998 in United States of America. This movie was directed by John Madden and written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard. Shakespeare in Love stars Gwyneth Paltrow as Viola de Lesseps, Joseph Fiennes as William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Rush as Philip Henslowe, Colin Firth as Lord Wessex, and Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth. This movie cost $25 million to make. And it earned more than $289 million at the box office. The movie’s running time is 123 minutes. The story is fictional, but some characters are based on real people.
     First I explain the story. William Shakespeare was a playwright in London. When he held an audition for his new play, Viola de Lesseps auditioned it as a man. She introduced herself as Thomas Kent. And she played the part of Romeo. At the same time, Shakespeare loved Viola. Though he knew that she intended to get marry to Lord Wessex, so it was their secret love. But he realized that Thomas Kent is Viola. Before the play was put on the stage, the secret that Thomas Kent is Viola was exposed to everyone. Then, women perform in front of an audience was forbidden by the law. So Viola disappeared and Shakespeare played the part of Romeo. However the day when the play put on the stage, an actor as Juliet went through the period when a boy’s voice changed break. So he couldn’t play as Juliet. Viola remembered the play’s lines, so she played the part of Juliet. Romeo and Juliet was a success. And the Queen enjoyed Shakespeare’s play. The play was a success, but Viola had to get married to Wessex and went to America by a decree of the Queen. Also Shakespeare had to write a new play that is Twelfth Night by a decree. The story tells Viola’s new life.
     I think about the title of this movie. Shakespeare in Love means the story of Shakespeare who falls in Love with Viola.
     After I watched this movie, I felt a pain my chest, because Shakespeare and Viola couldn’t tie the knot though they were in love with each other and separated. I think that a man and a woman who are in love with each other should get married. Viola had to get married to Wessex. It was very difficult to accept and bear for Viola, but also Wessex was in a difficult position, because Viola didn’t love him. I can’t imagine I get married to a man who loves another person. However they could not avoid doing, because there were ranks that are person of high rank and low rank. A person of high rank could not get married to a person of low rank. I thought that the romantic story always will be happy end. So when I was watching this movie, I thought that Queen Elizabeth tell Viola that she may get married Shakespeare. In fact, she didn’t say that. I felt the rank is very important at the time. This story is not just touching story.
     This story tells we have to have a positive attitude in the future. If I was Shakespeare, I would lose spirit of my life and would do nothing. Nevertheless, Shakespeare began writing the new play that is Viola’s new life. He loved her forever as different form. He loved her without seeing. We have to have a positive attitude in the future like Shakespeare.
     And a lot of words that is used by Shakespeare’s literary work are used by this story. I felt the words of this story are very noble. My most memorable words are “And I love poetry above all.” and “If my hurt is to be that you'll write no more, then I shall be the sorrier. The Queen commands a comedy, Will, for Twelfth Night.” I understood Viola’s feeling from this script. She really loves poetry, so although performing a play is prohibited, she performed a play as a man. The deed was unlawfully and she was a woman of the peerage in Britain, so it was essential that she had to obey the law. And she said to Shakespeare that if her hurt is to be that he’ll write no more, then she shall be the sorrier. I thought that the script’s meaning is what it was very hard for them to part from each other, but they could have positive attitude because of what she said. By reason of what she said, he could write a new play about her new life and she could get married to other person and go to other place. The word has deeply meant.
     And I took an interest in costumes. This movie reproduces the seventeenth century’s clothes like dress with a corset and jewelry perfectly. The noble put on clothes matched a noble and the merchant put on clothes matched their position. I thought that there are a lot of nice stories, nice words, nice music, and nice costume in this movie, so it received many prizes like Academy Awards, British Academy Film Awards, and Golden Globe Awards. And even after the passage of 14 years, people all over the world love this movie.
     Immediately after I watched it, I just felt a pain my chest, but as I think about the story, I understood the real meaning. This story tells us positive attitude. We can’t have our own way in everything. Then we don’t have to feel down. In Japan, there are many suicides. I know that Shakespeare has depressed and desolate of soul and wanted to commit suicide. So we have to have positive attitude like Shakespeare and Viola. And a feeling of love towards the opposite sex has a great power. Contemporary person were not clear about the feeling including me, we should rethink about love. (994)
